CHENNAI: Students from the city are missing from the top of the IIT-JEE list this year. None of the around 15,000 candidates has made it to the top 100 of the all-India merit list.

However, the overall performance is almost on a par with last year, said professor KK Anand, who runs a coaching centre.

S Nivvedan, a student of Sri Maharishi Vidya Mandir, took the top honours at 113, while Sai Krishna from Bala Vidya Mandir, Adyar, came in at 122. S Siddhartha came in at rank 203, while K Vignesh has been ranked 351. Five students hold ranks between the 400s, and three in the 500s. One rank holder in the 700s, five in the 800s and three in the 900s total up Chennai’s honours . “It is a good performance by students all round, considering that the paper was tougher this year compared to last year,” said Anand.

Top rankers said regular preparation helped them face the entrance exam. “I relaxed in the playground on Sunday mornings, watched cricket matches occasionally and worked regular hours every day at school and home to prepare for the exam,” said Nivvedan.

But the 17-year-old says his dream is only half-fulfilled . “Entering IIT is the first part. My dream is to empower myself with thinking skills at the IIT and then enter politics,” he added.

Vignesh is a tad disappointed that he is in the 300s, but is happy that he can get into IIT-Madras . “I want to do electrical engineering ,” he said. Sai Krishna was an all-rounder until his class 10. “I missed being in the school cricket team when I entered class 11, but I chilled out by taking part in culturals,” said the 17-year-old who is yet to decide whether to take up computer science or electrical engineering. Siddhartha says he was always confident that he would crack the JEE. Apart from paying attention in class, the 17-yearold from Salem also worked four hours on his own every day.
