Ahmedabad boy secures 29th rank in IIT-JEE

Ahmedabad: With the results of the joint entrance examination for admissions to the Indian Institutes of Technology — IIT-JEE-2010 — finally declared, Ahmedabad has a good reason to celebrate. City boy, Abhie Shah, a resident of Bhuyangdev and student of Udgam School, has done the city proud by securing the 29th all-India rank in the competitive exam.

“I am happy but not entirely satisfied,” Abhie told DNA on the phone from Mumbai. “I had expected a higher rank.” He is currently in Mumbai to take part in the training for the international chemistry Olympiad.

Unlike other toppers, Abhie did not bury himself in books. He studied only two hours a day, though his father was not happy with his method of preparation. But Abhie said, “It is useless to study like a mad man. It is more important to really understand what we study.”

Abhie was never a bookworm and did not believe in rote learning either and he probably suffered because of that too. “I was never a topper in my class, but I was good in mathematics,” he said.

His aggregate percentage in class XII was 78% but his cumulative score in physics, chemistry and maths (PCM) was 85%. “I always focused more on subjects relevant to the IIT exam. That could be one reason why my PCM scores were always better than those in other subjects,” Abhie added. He is the only child of his parents. His father, Shreyas Shah, holds a managerial position in IBM at Pune while his mother works with the State Bank of India in Ahmedabad.

Talking about his son’s achievement, Shreyas Shah said, “Studying in one of the IITs was his dream right from the beginning. Apart from what he studied in his tuition classes, Abhie studied only for two hours a day at home. He is very sharp. But I do not approve of his method of preparation and would advise other students against following his example.”

Abhie’s impressive 29th rank would get him admission to any of the IITs in the country but he wants to study at IIT-Bombay. “I will opt for either mechanical engineering or electronics,” he said.
While Abhie is yet to decide what he plans to do after graduating from IIT, he has already decided what not to do. He said, “I will not do an MBA after passing out from IIT.
