AMRITSAR: Punjab Govt. has accorded approval to Guru Nanak Dev University to open a centre at Khalsa College Public School for preparing rural students for the admission to Indian Institute of Technology from this academic session 2010.

The motive behind this program for the up-liftment of poor and rural youth of the State.

Vice Chancellor Dr. A.S, Brar said that earlier, Chief Minister of Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal has already given grant of about Rs. 1.40 Crores has been released to start this project.

Addressing to media person Prof. Brar said that he had taken up this initiative on the pattern of Bihar State, where an NGO of some professionals imparted coaching to bright students from economically backward sections. He said that this resulted a number of students from lower strata of society had successfully cracked the IIT Entrance Test.

He said that under this scheme student of rural areas of the Punjab having scored 60 percent marks in matriculation examination from PSEB, CBSE or ICSE and income level of whose parents is below Rs. 4 lac per annum shall be eligible to join this program.

He further clarified that in the first instance 50 students would be selected on the bases of merit of an Entrance Test based on syllabus of 10th standard only. Students, thus, selected would be formally admitted to Khalsa College Public School, Amritsar in +1 classes for two years. These students would be provided all facilities including board and lodge absolutely free. All expenditure to school and other agencies would be reimbursed out of the grant received for the purpose, he added.

He further said that besides imparting instructions for +1 and +2 classes these students would be given extra coaching to equip them to crack IIT-JEE in 2012-13. Vice-Chancellor said that he too will be taking classes of this group of students.

He said that students would also be provided with free books, study material, stationary and all other requisite facilities. No permanent staff and faculty appointments would be made.
