FIITJEE Faridabad or VMC (Extended / Regular) How to Decide?

Are you staying at Faridabad and in a dilemma about making the right choice regarding selection of a coaching program? Read on.....
(Disclaimer: You may always accuse me of being partial since I AM an employee of FIITJEE Limited (And proudly so for being associated with a team of bright and enthusiastic faculty members and students))

Here are some questions/ facts to be considered:

1. VMC was once a great brand where the three brothers themselves used to teach , however last year they have sold out to Educomp. So is VMC now still the same VMC or has gone in to commercialization and encashing the brand image? It opened 22 centers simultaneously. Will it be realistically possible for the brothers to take classes at all these centers?

2. It is told that the same brothers (one of the three is now permanently settled in US) will also be holding classes at Faridabad. Will it be through video conferencing? Can class control be achieved through video conferencing? Ideally the student teacher ratio should not exceed 50 if there is to be a proper communication. (What about class control, so many times teachers repeat the ideas looking at the body language of the students, is it even possible through video conferencing?).

3. FIITJEE Faridabad has produced excellent results in the very first year of its operations. In a small lot that the center had for the first year, It has 4 selections in RMO/GMO (Practically half the results from Faridabad). (It is Worth mentioning that in GMO only two students had qualified from faridabad and both students are from FIITJEE Faridabad besides there was also another student in RMO who was from FIITJEE Kalu Sarai).

4. In NTSE Out of total 24 students selected in the final stage, 5 students are regular classroom students of FIITJEE Faridabad. Besides Out of special NTSE support sessions that FIITJEE had arranged, 13 students cleared the final stage. This means 13 out of 24 students selected in final stage of NTSE were associated with FIITJEE Faridabad.

5. In NSEJS (First stage of Junior Science Olympiad), out of a total of 6 students selected from entire Haryana, 3 are fiitjee students (2 regular students and 1 from special NSEJS support sessions).

6. It is a general experience of students that FIITJEE Faridabad teachers are very caring and cooperative. So many students take so much extra contact time from Faculty for clearing of their doubts and faculty are always ready in their service. Is it even possible for a Student going to Punjabi Bagh on weekends to Clarify his doubts in the weekdays. Can one run all the way from Faridabad to Punjabi Bagh?

7. A few years back in the regular classroom program out of 15000 students (who appeared in their test), VMC has selected about 200 students. That means that statistically , this test was significantly more tough (or competitive) as compared to IIT JEE (8900 selections out of 4.7 lac). So, out of these, students, the expected selection rate in IIT JEE must be 100% .... Was it really 100%? ... No. it was about 60% (Yes! You read it right! From regular, not ECC.) (That too when they would move some of the relatively low scoring students from the regular batch to correspondence (thus reducing the denominator)).

So What should I do?
   Of course, as a career conscious student (or parent of a student) you should doubt everything that I (or for that matter anybody else) might say and do an independent research. Ask the already studying students (who are taking coaching) and their parents : if they are satisfied... If they really feel cared for... If their doubts are addressed.... It's a matter of your career so please do make an informed decision.

Seventy per cent weightage should be given to Class-XII performance of students while selecting them for prestigious IITs, a high level panel has recommended.

The panel comprising directors of IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay and IIT-Roorki has suggested that the IIT-JEE will be replaced by a broad-based National Aptitude Test (NAT). Thirty per cent weightage should be given to the NAT, the panel has said.

"The committee has submitted a draft report. It has favoured 70 per cent weightage to class-XII Board performance of students and 30 per cent to NAT," HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told said.

The proposed NAT will shortlist about 40,000 students who will be again called for another add-on test, the panel has said.

The successful candidates in the add-on test will be eligible for admission to any of the 15 IITs

The proposed NAT will be a comprehensive examination to test the students' raw talent than limiting it to certain specific subjects or objective type questions.

The committee, headed by IIT Kharagpur director Damodar Acharya, has submitted the draft report after holding country-wide consultations.

Sibal said the ministry has not accepted the suggestions yet and will take the matter to the IIT Council.

"We will take it to IIT Council after which the government will take a decision," the minister said.

According to an IIT director, the proposed NAT will have questions from all streams, including Science and Humanities of Class-XII level.

Sibal had set up the committee in February this year to study the existing JEE structure and suggest improvement in it.

The weightage on Class XII marks while preparing the cut-off for the admission into these elite institutes will discourage students from going to private coaching institutes.
At present, the IITs are taking students on the basis of cut-off prepared in view of the marks scored by students in IIT Joint Entrance Examination. Consideration of Class XII marks in the cut-off would ensure that meritorious students get into the IIT stream.

Hyderabad/New Delhi, June 19: The Andhra Pradesh government has made it clear that it does not endorse nor is it a part of the “common national curriculum” for science and mathematics at the senior secondary level as announced by the Union minister for human resource development, Mr Kapil Sibal, in New Delhi on Saturday.

Reacting to the media reports that the education ministers of all states had endorsed the Centre’s proposal to have a common curriculum on Saturday, the Andhra Pradesh minister for secondary education, Mr D. Manikya Vara Prasada Rao, said, “Neither am I aware of any such meeting nor did I attend it. We have no plans to change the existing Intermediate syllabus in the state. “We cannot take any hasty decision. The issue should be debated on at length among all the stakeholders,” he said.

When it was pointed out to Mr Vara Prasada Rao that a common curriculum will save student from appearing for multiple exams, he said, “Even IIT-JEE and AIEEE are conducted separately though both are for admissions into engineering courses at a national level. Let the Centre first integrate both these exams and then it can think of integrating the syllabus and exams of various states.” “There is no need to change the Intermediate syllabus in the state as it has proved to be of highest standards. A major chunk of seats in IIT, AIEEE and other national-level competitive exams are bagged by students from Andhra Pradesh every year. Almost all the top-10 ranks in IIT-JEE and AIEEE were bagged by our students this year. As far as the Centre’s proposal is concerned, it can only give us a suggestion. It cannot direct us as education is in the concurrent list and any decision has to be taken by the state government alone,” Mr Vara Prasada Rao said.

The common curriculum proposal seems to have not gone down well even with the officials of higher education department. They said the 20 states that endorsed the proposal were smaller states.

NEW DELHI: In what may mark a major shift away from the current scheme of admission to the country's bluechip engineering institutions, an HRD ministry panel has recommended 70% weightage to class XII marks and 30% for performance in an aptitude test to be conducted more than once a year, for the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination.

A cut-off list on the basis of the class XII result and the aptitude test will be prepared in the month of June every year and the top 40,000 will have to take the additional test for IITs. Right now, more than four lakh students appear for IIT-JEE in a single test.

The panel headed by Damodar Acharya, director of IIT Kharagpur, that gave its report to HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday, has also suggested that the aptitude test be an ongoing affair which students can take more than once.

However, the best score in the aptitude test -- which will have questions on reasoning, numerical ability and communication skills -- should be taken into account. It is only the add-on test for the top students that will have questions on physics, mathematics and chemistry. However, the panel has put a restriction on the number of times the add-on test can be taken.

Also, unlike the present system, right at the beginning, students will have to give their choice of IIT or other institutes -- like Indian Institute of Science Education & Research -- whose admission test is conducted through JEE. Students will also have to spell out their choice of branch of engineering or stream of pure science.

HRD sources said the ministry's first task would be to bring all state boards as well as CBSE on par with each other by developing a comprehensive weighted performance index so that there is no gross inequality among them and students do not suffer. Already, a core science and mathematics syllabus has been mooted by the HRD ministry and approved by the Council of Board of Secondary Education. "The move will ensure that students from small towns and even those who cannot afford expensive coaching can aim to be in IITs," a source said.

its not the question of necessity. coaching classes help you go in the right path, help you to select the correct books, guide you in your doubts, help you in all other ways.

even i dint join coaching and wasted my 11th thinking that am preparing correctly but i was wrong. now i have joined fiitjee and am gonna give jee2011.

i think its best you join a coaching class as it will make your preparation easier.

JAIPUR: For the first time, the Rajasthan police has decided to prepare a database of all the students coming to Kota from other places to ensure their safety and security.

According to sources, details like permanent address, contact number and the name of local guardian will be collected which would help the police in cracking the case if any untoward incident happens.

Nearly 80,000 students from all over the country come to Kota every year for preparing for various competitive examinations like IIT-JEE, AIPMT and AIEEE, among others. In the recent past, there have been several incidents in which students from other states were targeted by criminals. Also, ‘non-serious’ students were found indulging in criminal activities.

Recently, IG, Kota, Rajeev Dasot held a meeting of two DySPs and SHOs of Vigyan Nagar, Mahaveer Nagar, Dadabari and Jawahar Nagar police stations under which coaching institutes are located. During the meeting, he directed them to gather details of all the students coming to coaching institutes and hostels from the current session.

Talking to TOI, the IG said that a few local criminals have entered the coaching industry by setting up hostels and mess services and there is a chance that aspirants might fall prey to them. “While generating database, police will also collect details of those who run hostels and mess services in the city. There are several students who are not-so-serious about preparations and have been sent to Kota forcibly by their parents,” he said. “Such students, if found indulging in criminal acts, would be packed off to their native places,” he said.

Besides, senior police officers would visit coaching institutes and interact with students so that they could approach them directly in case of any emergency. Patrolling has also been increased in areas where coaching centres, hostels and messes are located, the IG said.

Recently, soon after two students were caught stealing mobile phones, police started keeping a tab on the activities of suspected students. Those who spend more time outside coaching classes and are involved in non-academic activities are already under police scanner, said an official. Nearly 15 students, who are suspected to be involved in criminal activities to make quick money, have already been identified, he said.

CEO of Career Point, Pramod Maheshwari said that the coaching institutes will welcome the move as it is an effort by the police for the benefit of students. However, police stations are yet to get fully computerized. Therefore, there might be challenges in the effective implementation of the new measures, he said.

Recent incidents:

March 2010: An engineering student, Yogesh Chaudhary (22), a native of Mathura, was found hanging from a tree in front of his rented accommodation in Riddhi Siddhi area of Kota.

December 2009: Two IIT-JEE aspirants - Nitin Prakash and Deepak Soni - arrested for mobile phone thefts. Eighteen mobile phones and a motorcycle were seized and cases were filed against them at three police stations.

October 2009: Ritu Yadav (20) of Jhajjar district of Haryana committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her room in Mahaveer Nagar of Kota. She was preparing for medical entrance examination in a city-based coaching centre.

September 2009: An engineering aspirant and a native of Bhind district in MP, Anand Singh (19), committed suicide in his room.

September 20: A native of Alwar and PMT aspirant, Nisha (17), committed suicide by jumping before a train near Keshavrai Patan village.

For rating of state-level engineering colleges, which form the bulk of the 3000-plus colleges in the country, the database provided by the departments of technical education, or formal committees such as the Admission Committee for Professional Courses, or higher education councils mandated by the state were looked into.

HYDERABAD: A G Reddy, an ex-serviceman, decided to give up his job in the Army several years ago to help his two children with their academics.

The risky move paid off on Wednesday when his son A Janardhan Reddy came out at the top of the engineering stream of Eamcet, the results of which were announced on Wednesday. Janardhan, a native of Guntur district , scored 159 marks in the test.

However, final rankings in the exam will be known only when the 25 per cent weightage given to the Intermediate examination --held up due to the prolonged revaluation exercise this year -- is factored into the Eamcet rankings.

Celebrating his son’s success, Reddy recalled how difficult it had been for him to quit his job as a senior clerk in the Army. “When I was posted in New Delhi, I was unhappy about the standard of teaching imparted to my children in the Kendriya Vidyalaya. So I decided to come back to Andhra Pradesh to give my children better education, despite knowing that I was not well placed financially.

I had completed 18 years of service and was left with several years of service,’’ Reddy told Express.

Being a senior clerk, Reddy and his family had access to service comforts in the Army. “I had to choose between my career and my children’s career. I chose my children,’’ he said. After quitting the job, Reddy did small jobs in the army quarters to support his family.

Janardhan Reddy, who stood seventh in the IIT-JEE, has been a winner in all the major competitive exams held this year.

JAIPUR: The IIT coaching industry in Kota is likely to witness a downslide in coming years. And with this, the overall economy of the city, which is largely based on IIT-JEE coaching, would plummet to an extent of 15%.

Pramod Maheshwari, director (academics) of Career Point, a leading coaching institute in the country, told ET the number of IIT aspirants coming to the city has died down considerably after the chance-restriction. “With government restricting aspirants’ IIT-attempts to only twice in consecutive years, students are now aiming at AIEEE and state pre-engineering tests to ensure a berth for themselves.

It will result into an overall shrinkage of 15% in the annual turnover of the coaching industry, which is estimated to be sitting at Rs 250 crore,” Mr Maheshwari pointed out.

Institutes, however, are gearing up to fight out the situation. Career Point is planning to launch an IPO to raise funds for their diversification plans. “We would be the first IIT coaching institute to go public. By raising around Rs 60 crore, we would initiate international educational programmes to cater to the global needs,” Mr Maheshwari informed.

Every year more than 20000 students land at Kota to realise their IIT dreams. Of which, around 1,500 students succeed, which is one-thirds of the total seats of IITs and allied institutes. Now that the chance restriction has come into play for the first time this year, number of students coming to Kota is going to fall in the coming session.

The trend was quite evident in the last IIT-JEE examination. In 2006, more than 3 lakh students appeared for the IIT-JEE while this year, less than 2.5 lakh competed for around 4,600 seats. “Now to match last year’s turnover, institutes either will have to hike the fee or add other courses like AIEEE and state pre-engineering tests. Also, there would be a question of survival for feeble players, who rely on students failing to get admission in top-of-the-line coaching institutes,” Mr Maheshwari feared.

Top IIT coaching institute Bansal Classes has now forayed into pre-medical coaching also. It has recently started its pre-medical unit in Jaipur. However, PK Bansal, CEO of Bansal Classes, maintaining that IIT coaching business is running smooth, said, “We have started pre-medical coaching on an experimental basis in Jaipur only. It’s nothing to do with IIT coaching, which is our main thrust. Chance-restriction would not have any impact on us, since we have limited seats and long queue of aspirants in waiting,” Mr Bansal said.

Apart from coaching institutes, hostel owners and other ancillary businesses have started feeling the heat. “Last year, we were 150% booked. And this year only 75% rooms are occupied. We are expecting further fall in accommodation in the next session,” Sharad Kapoor, a hostel owner, said.

"One day, when I was a third year student, one of my friends woke up very late (as usual in IITs). He got ready quickly without having his breakfast and rushed to his department from his hostel premises. When he entered the building and pushed the lift button he knew by that time the classes must have been started. Then suddenly what happened! The professor who was to deliver lecture in his class also came there for lift. That time the lift used to have a maximum capacity of five people and the lift already had four. So the student, to show respect for him allowed the professor for the lift. And he had to run up the stairs to his class which was on fourth or third floor (I forgot which one). When he reached his class…but alas! The professor had completed the attendance.

THE BIG QUESTION: Now what should have the professor done? Should he have ticked his name considering his good behavior? Or should he have not ticked his name considering he was late?"

This I have taken from an anonymous blog (perennial cynic). According to this post , this student would rank 9 in Bansal tests (in the dropper batch) and finally got AIR 4222 (In his comment (deleted) to this post he had clarified that some of the students who had poorer ranks in Bansal had better ranks in IIT JEE). However it is worth noting that in 2007 itself there were 2800 students in the dropper batch at Bansal (Reference)

I regret not having written in a long while. Frankly, things weren’t going well and blogging about defeat only leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

In spite of my best efforts and ample preparation, JEE just didn’t go my way. It was a paper fraught with too many tedious calculations and too little time to do them the proper way. The use of log and antilog tables simply accentuated this fact. One didn’t need to know the theory well enough as long as one knew the direct formulae. At the end of the day, it’s the IITs who decide which meritorious students they will teach.

The irregularities in the paper have been discussed to death and all the righteous rage over it has boiled over and disappeared. The corrections simply scorned educated public opinion and were only directed towards wasting enough time to prevent a re-exam. The Hindi aspirants, however, are a happier lot. In spite of a completely messed up paper and apathetic remedies, their selection trebled from 175 odd last year to over 500 now. I wonder how that happened to be.

On a separate note, JEE abolished the EML altogether this year granting a measure of relief to the thousands who got selected for the main list. The cutoff, as per my expectations, shot up and probably crossed 195 for an 8500 rank in the CML. We’ll know the exact figure in a week.

My rank, 4222, was in the range I had expected it to be. It could have got me something in BHU till last year but now that it is an IIT, it will be prefered over the newer institutes.

So much for a guy who was ranked 9 in the last Bansal test.

I will just fill in my counseling choices and wait for the AIEEE results.

His peers may be dreaming of MBAs and PhDs, but politics is the profession of choice for S. Nivvedan, one of the toppers in the entrance examination to IITs and other institutions.

Ranked 113 in JEE-2010, Nivvedan did his primary schooling in Ulippuram village near Salem, before moving to Salem city and, subsequently, Chennai. “I have always been interested in politics and it is my ambition to become a good politician,” he says.

The student of the FIITJEE Pinnacle two-year programme also likes visiting new places, and says that after enjoying his stay in Chennai for the last two years, he would like to join IIT-Bombay to experience life in the financial capital of the country.

This year, though the all-India topper is from the IIT-Madras zone [from Hyderabad], and with 2,619 students in the merit list of 12,676 candidates, Chennai city has seen a reduction in the number of students in the top ranks.

Ankur Jain, centre director, FIITJEE, Tamil Nadu and Kerala Operations, says though there are no top 100 ranks this year, the students have performed creditably. “A change of 1 mark can mean a difference of 40 ranks or so in the merit list.”

K.K. Anand, founder-director, SMART, says it is essential to start working towards mastering the concepts required for JEE from Class IX itself. “In Class XI and Class XII a proper balance should be maintained between studying for school and preparing for JEE. But, that said, there can be no excuses for candidates preparing for competitive examinations.”

Some students felt Mathematics was “tough” but B. Sai Krishna, ranked 122 in the merit list and a student of SMART, says practice is essential to doing well. “I did my best and expected a good rank. The paper was lengthy and there were new kinds of questions, but overall the paper was okay.” He wishes to study Computer Science or Electrical Engineering at IIT-Madras.

S. Siddharta, ranked 203, who has been a classmate of Nivvedan for seven years in Salem and in FIITJEE, Chennai, wants to study at IIT-Madras as a first step towards doing an MBA.

“I am happy with the result though I felt I could have done better.”

G. Sudha Mani, director and chief operating officer, SmartLearn Telcomp, says a number of students availed themselves of the scholarships offered by her organisation to use e-learning tools including lecture videos prepared by subject experts.

“Interactive, computer-based learning is a useful tool for students preparing for such examinations.”

Back-to-school wish-lists would rival those left out for Santa. City students have come a long way from demanding fancy bags and multi-compartment pencil boxes. From the latest phones to designer accessories, demands are getting bigger and bolder and parents are stretching budgets and credulity as they try and justify some as ‘reasonable’. But the reasons for wanting them are as old as the hills — making your peers go green.

Akshara Raj Singh, a class XII student at Chirec Public School, is waiting to show off her new iPhone when school starts, “All my friends have BlackBerrys and iPhones and I wanted one and it was about time I got one. I can’t wait for school to start to compare my phone’s applications with my friends’.”

Time’s running out for Pranati Reddy, a student at FIITJEE who is desperate for an expensive watch before she leaves school, “A Movado watch (basic model priced above Rs 25,000) tops my wish list right now. Since this is the final year, it’s the last time I can show off at school and a classic designer watch would be perfect. I want all my friends to go ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ because it is going to make a style statement. And since none of my friends wear a designer watch to school, it will set me apart.”

Pranati’s mother, Vishali Reddy believes this is a natural progression of the have-it-all generation, “Earlier children wanted the basics but now they look forward to indulging in grander things. Since all their primary needs are covered, they want luxuries and as they grow older, their demands get bigger. Every child wants to start the fresh school year with something new to flaunt.”

Even for Akshay K., a class X student from Little Flower, it’s about everyone else. “I saw these expensive shoes at a mall and absolutely loved them. Even if I saved up a whole year’s pocket money I still wouldn’t be able to afford them so I’ve been begging my parents to buy them for me. I am on the school’s basketball team and having new shoes would be really cool and my team mates would be really jealous,” he says.

On cue, “I saw the iPad online and really want one to flaunt in front of my friends,” says Sisir Sagar, a student at Hyderabad Public School. “It’s the latest must-have tech wise and it would make my day if I owned it!”

But Kirti Chaturvedi, vice principal, Hyderabad Public School makes sure that no one brings fancy gizmos to school and has made it a point to inform the parents not to indulge their children with expensive things. “Whenever we have found school kids carrying any fancy item, we have confiscated them. Even in the school diary we have pointed out that any expensive or fancy item will be confiscated. All the teachers are always on the lookout for phones and valuable items. We are discouraging this trend among the teenagers.”

But that doesn’t stop young Hyderabadis from showing off their “it” accessories. From sneaking them into their bags and pockets to showing them off at recess, they’ve learnt how to work their way around rules just to exercise their flaunt power.

(RTTNews) - The 17-year old Rajasthan-based tutorial service provider Career Point Infosystems plans to raise Rs.115 crore through an initial public offer or IPO to upgrade the infrastructure at the institute. This is the first educational company to go public, say reports.

Chairman and Managing Director Pramod Maheshwari said on Tuesday in Mumbai that the issue was expected to hit the capital market in 20 days. He added that approval from from Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was obtained.

The company said the proceeds from the issue would be used to built residential complexes for 3,000 outstation students, who come for coaching of IIT-JEE, IEEE and other entrance exams, Maheshwari said, adding that the funds would also be used for for building office facilities at Kota, as the company is also into educational consultancy and management services.

Neighbours and relatives rushed to Sumangal apartment in Kothrud to congratulate Omkar Thakur who ranked first in the state and stood 11th at the all India level IIT-Joint Entrance Examination 2010.

Out of 4.5 lakh candidates 13,104 cleared the exam.

For Thakur, a Garware junior college student, the result was “delightful” and an outcome of the effort he put in all of last year. “I had prepared hard for the exams and was expecting a good show,” said Thakur who attained 85 per cent in the HSC exams on Tuesday.

Thakur who had joined private classes to prepare for IIT entrance tests also claimed the first spot among the IIT-Bombay aspirants. Thakur spent more time preparing for IIT-JEE than for the HSC exams.

“From the beginning I had decided to focus more on IIT-JEE while I was confident of securing good marks in HSC exam as well,” said Thakur.

Although studies have been his first priority, for Thakur, who is a football lover, reading fiction and other non-academic books has also been part of his daily life.

“I want to do research in Computer Science in future,” said Thakur.

City lad Omkar Thakur repeated his feat of topping the list from state in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). He had topped the list in IIT-JEE also from Maharashtra. In the AIEEE, he has clinched third place all over the country.

Omkar has secured 397 out of 432 marks. He has become second student to come third in the exam in country after Sushant Sachdeva in 2004. Omkar is a student of Garware College. Incidentally, he was felicitated yesterday for his success in IIT-JEE when he got the news of second success.Omkar has already expressed his wish to pursue Computer Science in IIT Mumbai.

About 11 thousand students from Pune had appeared in AIEEE on Apirl 25. The students passing this exam get 15% seats in the engineering colleges in the state.

Justice Rajan Gupta of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notices to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on an application moved by Pranay Jain, a dyslexic student.

Jain has sought directions from the court for CBSE to declare his result for the examination of AIEEE. Jain has submitted that his result has been withheld and is not being declared.

Taking stock of the contentions, the High Court has directed the CBSE to file its response within 48 hours.

The application was filed by Jain in an ongoing petition pending in the High Court where Jain had demanded directions to the CBSE to consider him in the disabled category which was allowed by the court.

On the other hand, the CBSE, last week, had challenged an order dated April 24 awarded by a single bench of the High Court in favour of Pranay Jain. On April 23, a single bench had come to the rescue of dyslexic children, appearing for competitive examinations.

The court had allowed one hour’s extra time for each paper, to dyslexic children, appearing for the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Stating that there is no provision in the entire prospectus of AIEEE for providing extra time of one hour to any student.

Taking stock, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh had issued notices to Pranay Jain and the Union of India.
